If you’re asking, “Why do I need a farrier?” you probably have a horse, donkey or pony.
In this article I’ll be answering this question and going over all the reasons why you need a farrier.
Why You Need A Farrier: Because Horses Have Hooves
Horses and ponies are among the category of mammals known as “ungulate mammals” which means they have hooves.
Something I like to explain to people is that horse hooves are like human nails. In fact they both have Keratin in them, which makes them strong. They even grow back again and again like our nails do. And you’d be surprised at how fast they can grow.
Also, like human nails, horse hooves need to be trimmed.
Untrimmed Hooves
Hooves may be strong, but they are also immensely vulnerable.
In the wild horse hooves are worn down in different ways. Like running from predators. And looking to find food and water. As well as walking on rough terrain. In this way their hooves would remain trim and healthy. But in captivity hooves will continue to grow out. Which is uncomfortable for the horse, seriously unhealthy and can even be life-threatening.
What happens if you leave your horses’ hooves untrimmed?
- Hoof Flaring happens when a hoof continues growing for too long. The hoof flares out on the sides and/or at the toe instead of being symmetrical. Which makes the hooves more vulnerable to cracking and chips.
- Hoof chips/cracks happen with overgrown hooves because long hooves are more vulnerable. They can permanently damage the horse’s foot, leaving them lame.
- Hoof breaks are when a piece of hoof breaks off. They can injure more than just a horse’s foot. Breaks can quickly end up spreading to their whole leg, leaving them not only lame, but in life-long pain.
- Foundering/Laminitis is a disease that happens when lactic acid and bacterial endotoxins enter the bloodstream. This disease causes rotation of the coffin bone, or the bone found inside the hoof. This can cause your horse to go lame and sadly has no cure. And when walking it may look as if they’re walking on glass because of the pain. This should be diagnosed by a vet. But it is still very important for the farrier to monitor the health and balance of the horse’s feet.
These are just some of the reasons for good hoof care. “No hoof, no horse” is not a joke. Caring for your horse’s hooves is important for your horses’ health and life.
Why You Need A Farrier For Barefoot Horses
There are some horse owners who choose not to have their horses’ feet trimmed. This is because they believe it is more natural.
I will say that this requires much more activity and space that virtually no domesticated horse has. You may think that riding your horse daily would be enough but sadly it isn’t.
Many things play a part in your horse’s hoof health. Things like the terrain they walk on. Even their diet. And of course, the care their hooves receive.
I have read stories of people who never had a farrier and their horse was perfectly fine. But sometimes this ends badly. In one instance, a person moved across the country and the new terrain left their horse lame.
If you are going to attempt to leave their feet untrimmed, do it carefully. I believe as a farrier and horse lover that you need a farrier to check on their feet regularly. That way you know that continuing is healthy and safe or not for your horse.
I respect the opinion of people who don’t want humans to trim their horse’s hooves. But they choose this for their horse’s health and wellbeing. They shouldn’t hesitate to have an expert come out and check up on their horse.
Trimmed Hooves
Having a farrier is an essential part of owning a horse, pony or donkey. It’s as essential as having an established vet for them. Feeding them the best quality food. Making sure they have good clean water supply. And making sure they have a safe and comfortable area large enough to live in.
Hooves are susceptible to many diseases and injuries. Having a farrier regularly checking on and trimming your horse’s hooves is important. And it can even help you note early signs of many different hoof problems.
Some horses may need special types of horseshoes to have good healthy hooves. Farriers are experienced and knowledgeable about what kind is best for them. As well as how to put them on and take them off as needed. And of course, how to help your horse’s feet be as healthy and sound as possible.
Whether you want a farrier trimming your horses’ feet or not, you can trust a farrier. Farriers do an expert and professional job of helping you look out for your horse. They ensure that your horse’s hoof health is good.
